2012/2013 School Year - District Funding

Updated Spring 2013

The following discipline information was obtained from the Colorado Department of Education. We sorted and summarized the data to allow you to compare total funding per student (FPS) across all districts in Colorado. All schools are funded at the district level, and it is at the district level that the Federal and State governments provide funding for public education.

Average Funding Per Student

In the tables below, school districts are sorted in descending order based on their FPS subtotal (rather than their FPS total). We decided against sorting school districts based on their FPS total because FPS totals include one-time or otherwise temporary funds received from the State of Colorado (classified as "Other State Funding"). We wanted to focus on school districts' recurring FPS revenue, which is reflected in the FPS subtotal.

For the 2012/2013 school year, the average combined funding (excluding one-time and temporary other funding from the State) across Colorado was approximately $10,666 per student.

A few details regarding the data provided in the tables below:

FPS: Funding per student, which is calculated as total district revenue divided by total students attending schools within the district.

Green-Shaded FPS Subtotals: School districts where the FPS subtotal exceeds the $10,887 average by 15% or more are shaded in green and indicate such school districts are at a substantial funding advantage to other school districts.

Red-Shaded FPS Subtotals: School districts where the FPS subtotal falls below the $10,887 average by 15% or more are shaded in red and indicate such school districts are at a substantial funding disadvantage to other school districts.

Property Taxes: Revenue collected from taxes assessed on real property located within the boundary of the school district. Revenue amount is expressed on an FPS basis.

Other Local Sources: xxxxxx  Revenue amount is expressed on an FPS basis.

State Funding: xxxxxx  Revenue amount is expressed on an FPS basis.

Federal Funding: xxxxxxx  Revenue amount is expressed on an FPS basis.

Other State Funding: xxxxxxx  Revenue amount is expressed on an FPS basis.
